Free medical care would be provided to drug users who are staying at various relief camps because of the present crisis in Manipur, the Federation of Indian NGOs on Drug Abuse Prevention (FINGODAP) announced on Sunday.

Speaking to media at Manipur Press Club, Majorkhul, Imphal, FINGODAP member A Jayantakumar highlighted that the state has been facing the impact of illicit drugs for more than 50 years and that the number of drug users in Manipur had been on the rise ever since.
He maintained that heroin addiction in particular was among the highest compared to other drug addictions.
“The primary reason behind such rise is the easy availability of drugs and conversion of Manipur from a transit point to a drug producing region,” he said.
He expressed apprehension that such alarming rise in drug manufacturing and plantation may give birth to narco-terrorists in Manipur.
On the other hand, Jayantakumar urged people in Manipur not to demean addicts and treat them with respect and dignity.
He highlighted that 10 rehabilitation centres had stopped operating because of the ongoing situation in Manipur.
The displaced staff of these centres have volunteered to render service for free if the government provides an alternative centre, he added.
He urged the authorities to dispense swift measures for drug users in Manipur and help the addicts in acclimatising to mainstream life.
