Fisherman drowns at Loktak Lake due to storm

A fisherman died when his boat sank in Loktak Lake due to a storm which happened on Sunday.

A fisherman died when his boat sank in Loktak Lake due to a storm which happened on Sunday from 5.30 am to 7 am.

The deceased has been identified as Khwairakpam Thoi, 54, son of (L) Kh. Yaimachou of Ithing Awang Leikai. According to the deceased family members, Thoi went to Loktak Lake in Bishnupur district to take out his fishing net at around 5am.

Every fisherman on the lake took shelter inside a Phumsang when the storm started but Thoi set off on his boat to take out his fishing net when the storm cooled down a bit. He was stopped by the other fishermen not to set off till the storm completely stopped but he denied and took off.

Around 6.30 am when the other fishermen set off as the storm stopped, they found Thoi’s boat without him. They searched for him and found his body underwater as he had drowned during the storm.

Keibul Lamjao Police Station has registered a case on the incident and the body of the deceased has been handed over to the family members after conducting a post mortem at RIMS mortuary.
