Fire burns down Convent; property worth over Rs 8 lakh lost in Senapati

A fire that broke out in Senapati village on Tuesday caused heavy damage to property, but no casualty was reported, sources said.

A fire which broke out at Laii village, Senapati district, Manipur burnt down the convent of Daughters of St Francis de sales. The fire that took place around around 12:15 am on Tuesday caused heavy damage. Property worth over Rs 8 lakh was burnt to ashes, sources said.

The convent was a little isolated from the village and hearing the sound and noise, the villagers came and fought the fire for an hour and saved the Sacred Heart School Laii which was the next building, the sources said.

In the process, property worth over Rs 8 lakh worth was destroyed. Electronic items such as laptop, mobile, inverter, battery, electric heater, induction, rice cooker, furniture such as beds, tables, etc. were destroyed, the sources said.

However, there was no loss of human or livestock. Sr Leena Mylackal, Sister Superior along with Sr Rajini and Sr Christina managed to escape the fire. They came to this centre in the year 2017 and it is their first mission centre in Manipur.

Due to the remoteness of the village they could not contact the fire brigade at Senapati.
