In view of fertiliser shortage facing the farmers in the state despite the government's repeated announcements of having enough urea stock, the Nongchup Imphal Palem Ima Apunba Lup (NIMPAL) on Friday threatened to hold various forms of protest if the government failed to act.
Expressing concern over the plight of the farmers, NIMPAL asked, “Where have all the fertilizers gone?”
Pointing out that several farmers have also raised allegations about politicising the distribution of fertiliser through the MLAs concerned, NIMPAL secretary general S Shanti Leima told mediapersons in Imphal West that fertiliser is being sold in the black market.
A few years ago, fertilisers were available in the open market and farmers were able to get good harvest, she said.
However, the unavailability of fertiliser in the market and the government’s failure to distribute it in time have created apprehension among the farming community regarding the outcome of the harvest, she said.
Appealing to the state government to streamline the process of distributing fertiliser and provide farmers the required amount of fertilizer in time, the secretary general said NIMPAL will take up various forms of agitations if the government failed to address the issue.
