Farming begins amid tight security in violence-hit Manipur

Agricultural activities have started in the vulnerable fringe areas of Chanung, Moirangpurel and Tumukhong in Imphal East districts with security cover provided by the Manipur Police and Central Forces.

Agricultural activities have reportedly began in some vulnerable areas of Imphal East district under the watchful eyes and security cover by the state and central security forces.

According to the Manipur Police Control Room, agricultural activities have started in the vulnerable fringe areas of Chanung, Moirangpurel and Tumukhong in Imphal East districts with security cover provided by the Manipur Police and Central Forces.

Last Saturday, Inspector General of Police, (Ops), IK Muivah told the media that as security measures taken by the state government for the protection of farmers with the coming of monsoon crop season, the state government will deploy 2,267 personnel from Manipur Rifles and Indian Reserve Battalion.

Muivah informed had said that for Imphal West district, 822 personnel will be deployed; 298 personnel for Imphal East; 236 personnel for Bishnupur; 147 personnel for Thoubal; 204 personnel for Kakching; 200 personnel for Kangpokpi and 300 personnel for Churachandpur for protection of farmers.

The Police said that the situation is tense in some places with sporadic incidents of firing and congregation of unruly mobs during the last 24 hours. However, the situation is normal in most districts, the police added.

The police further stated that the state police and central forces conducted search operations in both the hill and valley districts and destroyed two more bunkers and recovered six more arms from Imphal East district. 

The police also informed that about 127 Nakas/ Checkpoints were installed in different districts of Manipur, both in the hill and the valley and Police has detained 298 persons in connection with violations in different districts of the State.

Movement of essential items is ensured along NH37 and NH2 with strict security measures taken up in all vulnerable locations above providing security convoy in sensitive stretches to ensure free and safe movement of vehicles, it added.

The police also stated that 350 loaded vehicles left Jiribam and 148 loaded vehicles left Noney for Imphal along NH37 while 21 vehicles have reached Sekmai from Dimapur and 34 vehicles have left Sekmai for Dimapur along NH2.

Appeal is made to the general public to extend all possible help in bringing normalcy in the state, to clarify any rumour by dialling rumour free number - 9233522822 of Central Control room, and to return and deposit arms, ammunition and explosives to the police or security forces immediately, the police said.
