The Judicial Magistrate First Class, Imphal West-II, as Duty Magistrate of Imphal West released evening newspaper ‘Kangleipakki Meira’ editor Wangkhemcha Shyamjai on Sunday.
The editor was arrested on Friday in connection with an FIR against him for allegedly publishing fake and fabricated news.
He was remanded to three days police custody by the Duty Magistrate, Imphal West till Sunday.
While producing him before the duty magistrate, the IO of the case submitted that Shyamjai is a habitual offender by publishing fake and fabricated news in his daily newspaper and prayed for judicial custody to prevent any criminal acts as well as to protect the witnesses.
But, counsel of Shyamjai submitted that Shyamjai is quite innocent and being editor of Kangleipakki Meira had published the news item received from his correspondent or reliable source and there was no malafide intention on publishing the news item.
Further, the editor does not have any knowledge of news being fake and also was never given a chance to verify the news and such allegation are false and concocted. The Editor has abide to cooperate in investigation, the counsel said and prayed for releasing him on bail.
The court, after considering the submission, stated that the investigation is almost completed and the editor is willing to cooperate in the investigation and are ready to furnish surety bond. So, the editor was released on bail by furnishing PR bond Rs 50,000 with like amount surety.
