Drugs worth Rs 34 crore seized; two arrested in Kangpokpi

War on Drugs will be intensified in Kangpokpi district by the district police, SP Kangpokpi Amrita Sinha said.

On the heels of two big drugs haul, Kangpokpi police seized yet another huge quantity of contraband drugs worth more than Rs 34 crore in the international market on Friday.

In connection with the seizure, a press meet was held on Monday at the office of SP Kangpokpi in the presence of SP Kangpokpi Amrita Sinha; additional SP (Law and Order) Abul Kalam; additional SP(Ops) Tholu Rocky; inspector Sunil Kumar, OC Kangpokpi, and other officials.

Amrita Sinha said that based on the information about the suspicious movement of drug peddlers along the highway, Kangpokpi police teams led by SI S Raju Singh and SI Hemjamang Khongsai stopped a Mahindra Bolero (Grey color), bearing registration no AS12H-1485 for checking and frisking at Kangpokpi Police Station Gate along the Trans Asian Highway No 1(NH-2).

The driver identified as P Sahriini Mikrii ,56, son of Puni of Laii in Senapati district, and the occupant identified as Paotinmang Khongsai, 21, son of Thanglen Khongsai of J Songpijang village, Tengnoupal Sub Division of Chandel, (as per their Aadhar Cards), at present residing at Naphai village under Lhungtin Sub Division in Kangpokpi district were found behaving in a very suspicious manner.

The district police chief further said that on preliminary inquiries, the duo denied the presence of the contraband drugs in their vehicle but due to their suspicious nature and their denial of the transportation of drugs in the vehicle, a mechanic was requisitioned for detailed inspection.

On careful examination, two boxes were found neatly welded at the undercarriage. The accused then revealed the presence of contraband drugs in the vehicle and upon their disclosure, due formalities and SoPs of the NDPS Act were observed and recovered the drugs in the presence of the Executive Magistrate and independent witnesses while the two accused persons were formally arrested by observing formalities, added the IPS officer.

She also said that a regular case under FIR No. 23(6)2022KPI-PS u/s 21(C)/29/60(3) ND and PS Act has been registered for investigation.

The duo was produced before the JMFC/Kpi and remanded to 10 days of police custody till June 27.
She further said that the War on Drugs will be intensified in the district by the district police.

Meanwhile, additional SP (Law and Order) Abul Kalam said that apart from the three major seizures, the district police on March 30 seized 11 soaps of contraband drugs and arrested one person and on April 22, a huge quantity of contraband items including 1 Kg of Opium, 200 tablets of WY, and some quantity of Heroin in Saitu area along with two persons who are in judicial custody now.

On May 11, another contraband item including 1 kg of poppy was seized and one person was arrested in the Saikul area and on June 10, two persons were arrested with contraband items.

The chief minister had recently rewarded Kangpokpi police with Rs.10 lakh in recognition of the district police’s two major successful operations under War on Drugs 2.0, during which around 4.271 kg of Heroin worth approximately Rs. 58.95 crore in the international market were seized.

The third massive haul was made by the district police on June 17 afternoon at around 4 pm where four packets of contraband drugs suspected to be brown sugar and weighing approximately 2.025 kg estimated to be Rs. 34,13,20,000 in the international market were seized.

The drugs were seized during intensive frisking and checking by the police teams led by sub inspector S Raju Singh and sub inspector Hemjamang Khongsai, the same two police officers who led the police teams in the previous two major seizures as well, under the overall supervision and instruction of SP Kangpokpi Amrita Sinha; additional SP (Law and Order) Abul Kalam; additional SP(Ops) Tholu Rocky and under the direct command of OC Kangpokpi inspector Sunil Kumar.
