The most common root causes of crime against women is substance abuse, Kanglei Ima Lup (KIL) president RK Sanahanbi said and apprised the youths of Manipur to stop being influenced by psychotropic drugs and substances.
She was speaking to the media on the sidelines of the observance of 12th foundation day of KIL held at the Manipur Press Club in Imphal West on Sunday.
She pointed out that the youths of the society as well as women are rapidly falling into the world of drugs and substance abuse, and stressed on the need to take up stringed measures to save the future of Manipur.
Meanwhile the numbers of indigenous population are decreasing and are slowly being overtaken by the non-locals, she added.
Sanahanbi further mentioned that the state government needs to focus more on drug issues and crime against women as there is not a day passed without reading an article in the newspaper regarding drugs related issues and crime against women.
“Every day we hear about the seizing of large quantities of drugs through the media; however, we never come across reports on what happened to those confiscated drugs or to those arrested with drugs.”
Destruction of poppy plantations after the harvest is meaningless, she further said, adding that the government needs to work sincerely to eradicate poppy cultivation and drug menace from Manipur.
The president lastly apprised the youths to think about the future of Manipur and move towards the positive direction and become free from drugs and substance abuse for a prosperous and a better Manipur.
Advisor of KIL Ibotombi Khuman while delivering the chief guest speech pointed out the need to have more female legislatures in the state to fulfil UNESCO's key action of gender equality.
He pointed out that the females in the state outsmarted the number of male in the ranking basis of the high school and higher secondary examination and the numbers of female doctors are also rapidly increasing in the state.
He highlighted the contribution of Imas (elderly women folks) of Manipur in different issues of the state such as AFSPA, and lauded their commitment towards the society and for the better future of Manipur.
Media personalities and stakeholders of the state were also felicitated during the observance to acknowledge their contributions towards society.
The function was also attended by legal advisor of KIL advocate Naorem Binodini Devi as guest of honour.
