Miscreants suspected to be ATSUM bandh supporters attempted to burn the office building of deputy commissioner Tamenglong on Sunday, but failed as the chowkidar reported the incident in time and helped douse the fire.
Miscreants numbering around 10 and whose faces were covered up entered the Deputy Commissioner Office Complex Tamenglong at Mini Secretariat, Farmlane, Tamenglong Ward No VI, which is around 4 kilometres from the district headquarters at around 7.49 pm Sunday. They tried to burn down the office building of deputy commissioner Tamenglong.
As the chowkidar intervened, the miscreants fled away by taking advantage of the darkness. He was also physically assaulted by some of the miscreants with a cudgel on his back but he escaped injuries. The chowkidar with all his might doused the fire and raised the alarm to the security force and neighbours.

Speaking to the media, chowkidar of deputy commissioner Tamenglong, Keihiamlung Gonmei, 45, said that around 10 miscreants came and broke the main gate. As he was busy confronting the miscreants, some attempted to start the fire using petrol and the wooden sticks they had brought.
They wore face masks and could not be identified, he said, adding that a plastic chair, dustbin and a CCTV camera were destroyed in the incident.

On receiving the information, a fire brigade team led by deputy commissioner Tamenglong and sub-divisional officer Tamenglong and some police personnel also arrived at the site of the incident.
Tamenglong police has registered a case in connection with the incident and security has been beefed up in the district, sources said.
