Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Monday visited Ukhrul and Moreh in Tengnoupal and held public meetings in the run up to the 12th Manipur Assembly elections which is scheduled on February 28 and March 5, and said that BJP is committed to making Manipur an economic powerhouse.

Addressing a public meeting in Ukhrul Assembly Constituency, the union minister said that the BJP is committed to make Manipur the economic powerhouse. He said that Manipur has witnessed accelerated holistic growth under the leadership of Chief Minister N Biren Singh. BJP is committed to making Manipur an economic powerhouse, Gadkari added.

The Union minister also appealed to the citizens of Ukhrul assembly constituency to bless the BJP candidate and make Manipur prosperous.

During his visit to Moreh, Gadkari promised to construct roads within Moreh town soon, and said that a project amount of Rs 50,000 crore has been earmarked for the development of roads and highways in the state.

The minister was addressing a one-day public meeting organised at Galngam Lentuol Moreh.

 “The Union government under the leadership of Narendra Modi ji has taken special initiative to develop the Northeast region… in order to develop Manipur and eradicate poverty, the Central Government has taken up various projects and programmes on industry, tourism and trade,” he said.

To facilitate trade activities, a road connectivity project has been taken up from Imphal to Moreh and to continue up to Myanmar and South East Asian countries, he said.

Fifty per cent of the two-lane highway construction works between Imphal to Moreh has been completed, he said, adding that the remaining works will be completed by December 2022. National Highway Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL) is introduced to develop all roads and highways of the Northeast Region.

Trade between India and Myanmar and SEAC will bring a change in the economy of the state, he said. Manipur being a high potential for tourism, various projects are on the pipeline to develop all the requirements, he said.

Gadkari also said that passenger ropeway transportation will be constructed/implemented in the Loktak village between Sendra and Moirang and Keibul Lamjao floating national park will be developed.

Hydro electric power stations will be constructed at various places in the state so that there will be surplus power supply in the state, he assured.

The Union minister also urged the gathering to vote for Letpao Haokip, a dedicated BJP candidate, who is willing to work for the backward villages of this constituency.

Haokip, in his speech, appealed to the Union minister to develop road connectivity, trade and tourism and healthcare in Moreh town.

The one-day political conference was also attended by Om Prakash- treasurer, BJP Manipur Pradesh; Janglet Haokip- vice chairman, Relief and Disaster, GOM; SK Angshel Lamjang- BJP Chandel District; Lukhosei Zou, former chairman, ADC Chandel; Chineivah Haokip- Former ADC member along with leaders from various CSOs, students organisation, chiefs of different villages, Meira paibis and local public of Moreh town and surrounding villages.
