The All Naga Students’ Association, Manipur (ANSAM) said that its former president was “brutally assaulted” by Assam Rifles for no reason whatsoever.
According to the ANSAM, the incident happened on September 7 at 7:30 pm when the victim was on his way home from Imphal after work.
While vehemently condemning the “heinous act” of the 26 Assam Rifles at Bijoypur, Kakching district of Manipur, where former ANSAM president Wanglar Thirthung was “brutally assaulted, the Naga student body “considers such an unlawful act of the Assam Rifles as a direct life attempt on the former president of ANSAM with a hidden policy to escalate the present volatile situation in Manipur by targeting the innocent Nagas for which we took it very seriously and have doubt with the motives of operation of the Assam Rifles at the check post”.
According to the ANSAM, Wanglar was first stopped by the Manipur police commandos and he was allowed to pass after the frisking. He was again stopped by the Assam Rifles a few meters away where he was “intentionally beaten severely without any reason”, the Naga student body alleged.
The motives and meaning of the Assam Rifles who called themselves to be the “friends of the hill people” are really questionable for having failed to safeguard the citizens, the ANSAM reasoned.
The Naga student body then said, “What can we expect from those law implementing agencies who are meant to abide by the law become law breakers”.
The ANSAM then demanded immediate response with due apology from the concerned officers to the very incident and befitting punishment should be given to the Assam Rifles personnel who are involved in the incident failing to which the Naga body student asserted it will proceed to further serious steps.
