Union Home Minister Amit Shah has assured the Naga MLAs of Manipur that all communities would be consulted before any plan or solution is considered to usher in peace and normalcy in the state.

This was stated by Manipur Water Resources Minister Awangbow Newmai while addressing reporters at Chumukedima, which is located around 16 km from Dimapur, Nagaland on Friday.

Newmai said 10 Naga MLAs from Manipur, including himself, met Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on June 7 evening.

The MLAs are Awangbow Newmai, Khasim Vashum, Losii Dikho, K Leisiyo and Ram Muivah of NPF, SS Olish and Dinganglung Panmei of BJP, N Kayisi and Janghemlung Panmei of NPP, and Independent J Kumo Sha.

Outer Manipur MP Lorho Pfoze was also part of the Naga delegation. Making a stopover at Dimapur, the MLAs briefed the press on Friday on their meeting with the Union Home Minister.

“The Home Minister assured us that the three major communities, Meiteis, Nagas, and Kukis, would be consulted before any plan or solution is pursued,” Newmai said.

He insisted that the Nagas were neither silent on the Manipur situation nor taking sides.

“As peace-loving people, Nagas do not want any war with anybody. Nor do we want our friends and neighbours to engage in a war. We are trying to reach out to the warring groups toward lasting peace,” he said.

Minister Awangbow said, "We have made no demand to the Centre, but in the event of any arrangement, Naga areas should not be touched as it will create more problems."

Newmai appreciated Shah for prompt action to bring the situation in Manipur under control.

“We had a meaningful discussion with Mr. Shah on the present situation in Manipur. We told him categorically that our Naga areas should not be touched in the event of any arrangement for a separate administration.”

He further said, “We told the Home Minister that touching the Naga areas for any solution will create more problems. We also made it clear that any arrangement for Nagas should be based on the peace process between the Nagas and the government of India,” Mr. Newmai said.

He also said that the Naga MLAs conveyed to Amit Shah that they were trying to broker peace between the Meiteis and the Kukis.

“He has responded us very nicely and we are happy. In his invitation we went to meet him as Naga MLAs of Manipur,” Awangbow added.
