Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Saturday said there is acute shortage of doctors in the state and hence the need to increase medical (MBBS) seats and the number of physicians.

In view of the changing global scenario impacting human health, there is a need to consider increasing the number of doctors in the state, Biren said while addressing the 14th Foundation Day celebration of JNIMS held at its premises, Porompat, Imphal on Saturday.

Biren said to increase the number of doctors in the state, the state government is making effort to hike MBBS seat capacity in JNIMS and Churachandpur District Hospital. But due to some unavoidable problems, it couldn’t be increased this time, he said.

The CM further stated that intake capacity of MBBS in Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) couldn’t be increased this coming academic session due to some pending cases.

The present government is giving big importance in health and education and as such most of schemes launched by the BJP government are related to these two areas, the CM said.

The state government is trying to upgrade RIMS to the level of All India Institute of Medical Sciences. Besides this, infrastructure of JNIMS is also improving from time to time by installing sophisticated equipment, the CM added.

“There is no point in bringing infrastructure development when the health and education qualification of the majority population of society is in poor condition. Infrastructure alone cannot bring all round prosperity in the society,” he added.

The programme was attended by MLA, Dr Sapam Ranjan Singh; MLA, Leishangthem Susindro Meitei and additional chief secretary, Health and Family Welfare, V Vumlunmang as guests of honour and president respectively.
