The six accused, who had surrendered to Thoubal Police in connection with the death of Korimayum Abdulah, had been remanded in police custody for further investigation till June 1 after they were produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM), Thoubal court on Monday.

The arrested suspects are the women who had eloped with Abdullah, namely Tabashum, 19, daughter of Md Abdul Hakim from Keibung Sana Sibi Leirak; Tabashum’s elder sister Sana and her husband Md Mujibur Abdullah from Lilong Nungei Khunou.

Abdullah’s three friends who accompanied him the last time he was seen were also arrested. They are Md Bakshar, son of Yusuk Ali and Md Sajish Khan, son of Md Hellaluddin from Yairipok Ningthounai; and Md Tarique, son of Md Serajuddin from Yairipok Tulihal Moinam.

According to sources, Abdullah and his three friends were invited for a meal by Tabashum’s sister Sana at her residence at Lilong Nungei Khunou. It added that after they had dinner, Abdullah was captured while his three friends were chased out. After the incident, Abdullah’s whereabouts could not be found, but a few days later his mortal remains were found in the Imphal River, it mentioned.

Meanwhile, Tabashum had filed a complaint of rape against Abdullah to Women Police Station Thoubal. The Women Police Station Thoubal officer in-charge had issued a summon copy on May 18 summoning Abdullah to the police station.

On the other hand, a JAC for the death of Abdullah on Monday had submitted a memorandum to chief minister N Biren to take up necessary action against the suspects within 24 hours.

The memorandum demanded the authority to submit charge sheet regarding the alleged murder, within four weeks, and to take up necessary against the responsible police officer who allegedly denied timely action for the missing case of Abdullah.

It demanded the government to provide the bereaved family of Abdullah with an apt job, and drew the authority’s attention to meet the demands of the JAC due to the sensitivity of the issue.

In a press meet held at Yairipok Changamdabi, convenor of the JAC Md Ayub Kori condemned the alleged negligence of the Lilong Police Station in regard to the missing report of Abdullah filed on May 18.

He questioned why the police failed to take up timely action against the accused Md Mujibur and his wife Sana despite the available photo and video evidence. He also alleged the police and the accused for conspiring to take Abdullah’s life.

He further accused the police for being biased and condemned the “prioritisation of the alleged rape complaint filed by Tabashum, while denying timely action for the missing report for Abdullah.”

He demanded for transparency in the case, and cautioned that the JAC along with other likeminded Civil Society Organisations  will launch strong protests unless the demands are fulfilled. The body will not be claimed until the issue is resolved, he added.

Muslim Council Manipur (MCM) president Haji Arafat and Manipur Muslim Welfare Organisation (MMWO) president Korimayum Boboy said that Korimayum Abdullah could have been saved had the Lilong Police taken the necessary action on time.
