18th mega surgical outreach camp begins in Tamenglong

At least 12 major cases and 14 minor case patients were operated on Wednesday night.

The District health society Tamenglong with JNIMS Porompat started its 18th mega surgical outreach camp at Tamenglong district hospital Duigailong on Thursday. 

Forest Minister Awangbow Newmai; JNIMS Surgical department professor Dr N Jitendra singh, chief medical officer Tamenglong attended as chief guest, guest of honour and president of the inaugural function. 

ADC Tamenglong caretaker Namsinrei Panmei, medical officers of District Hospital, Tamenglong, and other dignitaries attended the event. 

In his chief guest speech, Forest minister Awangbow Newmai expressed his sincere gratitude to the doctor’s team which had come a long way, leaving behind their daily schedule for the sake of the people of Tamenglong. He also thanked the 44 Assam rifles for help. 

He said the doctors are removing the families from burden by conducting the surgical camp. A person has to spend lakhs of money for treatment is referred to Imphal, he added.

He said that many sick persons waiting to undergo operation are reporting to him, and he also proposed to organise another surgical camp before Christmas at district headquarters. He further urged all the people to stay informed and come to attend the surgical camp. 

He narrated how the government had to run around for oxygen during the pandemic. Now, the oxygen plant is set up in the district hospital and it is supplied in the indoor hospital through pipes, he said.

He recalled that Tamenglong district was the first district to get a TrueNat machine from donations for testing Covid infection.

In his speech as a guest of honour, professor of JNIMS Surgical department Dr N Jitendra singh said that at least 12 major cases and 14 minor case patients were operated on Wednesday night. He added that a person, if operated in Imphal, would spend at least Rs 2 lakh.

He said that he had attended surgical camps 18 times till date, during which more than 600 persons have been operated.

He thanked God that there were no adverse effects reported till today. He also credited his colleagues in successfully carrying out the surgical outreach camp in hill districts.

Knowing the hardships faced by the people residing in the hills, he along with other colleagues had started the surgical outreach camp from 2013.

He assured that their team is always ready to come and do surgeries at any time. 

A doctors’ team having 18 members led by JNIMS Surgical department professor Dr N Jitendra singh arrived and the surgical camp has commenced. 

In the mega surgical camp, as many as 27 major cases including OBS and gynae cases with 42 minor cases have undergone surgery. 

Dr G Majachunglu welcomed all the doctors coming all away from Imphal. She said that few patients referred to Imphal needed senior medical consultation. 

She also mentioned that a laparoscopic key-hole surgical machine bought under HADP funds was first used; however, the operation team could not further use it due to non-clarity in the screen.

A certificate was also given to the doctors who came from Imphal. 

Forest Minister Awangbow Newmai also inspected the dialysis unit and the blood bank during his short visit at the district hospital.
