166 displaced Meiteis safely escorted from Moreh

The 166 displaced Meiteis who returned from Moreh are reportedly in safe custody of Thoubal and Kakching District Apunba Lup.

As many as 166 Meiteis, who fled Moreh and have been shifting locations for their safety following the ethnic clash which broke out on May 3 were safely escorted from the town and are in safe custody of Thoubal and Kakching District Apunba Lup (TAKDAL).

The news comes after over 200 displaced Meiteis from Moreh were hiding in Myanmar and then brought to Manipur earlier this month.

According to sources, the displaced persons fled Moreh to Myanmar when the clash broke out and later sought refuge at 5th Assam Rifles Camp Moreh on August 18 who escorted them to 26 Assam Rifles camp at Pallel on Sunday night, where they were safely handed over to Thoubal and Kakching District Apunba Lup (TAKDAL) around 9 pm.

From there, they were escorted by various civil society organisations to Kakching. Upon reaching Kakching Lamkhai, members including those from Committee for Peace and Social Harmony Head office Kakching, Langsai Thouna Kakching and residents of kakching warmly welcomed the weary individuals and provided them shelter at the relief camp opened at Indoor Stadium Kakching.

Of the 166 individuals who arrived, 123 returned to their homes and to their relatives while the remaining 43 stayed back at the relief camp, sources added.

Meanwhile, as per TADKAL, a total of 223 individuals including 91 males, 96 females and 36 children who fled to Myanmar following the conflict, safely returned to the state on August 18 and had been seeking refuge at the 5th AR camp in Moreh. It is also said that 35 Meiteis are still at the AR camp.
