As many as 15 cases of Oral Submucous Fibrosis (OSMF), an oral precancerous condition, were detected during a free dental screening and treatment camp conducted as a part of the Sangai Festival 2022 at the Hatta Kangjeibung in Imphal East by JNIMS Dental College.

According to assistant professor Dr Khundrakpam Irengba of the Department of Public Health Dentistry, who is in-charge of the stall set up in the festival venue, use of chewable tobacco products is the main factor leading to OSMF which is at an alarming stage.

On an average, around 100 persons turned up per day and took the benefits of the free screening and treatment conducted at the festival venue from day eight of the festival from 9 am to 9 pm. However, on the ninth day the numbers of patients doubled up with the announcement of a half holiday, the doctor said.

One of the significance of the stalls, managed by around 50 intern students on a routine basis, was the use of an intra-oral camera where patients can visualise the condition of his or her teeth.

Most of the minor cases such as scaling and restoration were treated at the stall itself, while the complicated cases such as root canal treatment were referred to JNIMS at free of cost.

Besides the OSMF, the camp also detected around 10 to 15 cases of Premalignant Lesions or Conditions daily, which may be at risk for transforming into an oral cancer.

As many neglected oral health due to certain reasons, the stall was opened with the aim to educate the public on the importance of oral hygiene and health, the doctor said, adding, “Here early detection leads to easy cure and saves money.”

According to the assistant professor, the common cases detected among children are Dental Caries (cavities), Gingivitis (gum bleeding) among adolescents and Periodontitis (severe gum infections) among adults.

As oral health is one of the most important aspects to a healthy life, he appealed to the public to maintain good oral health by ways of regular brushing and flossing of teeth, rinsing of mouth and visit to dentist every six months for check-up, besides staying away from tobacco uses.

Extending gratitude to the chief minister, the director of JNIMS and the principal of JNIMS Dental College for their support in opening such a stall, which benefits the public, he called on the public to come and take advantage of the camp.

According to the health team, all the persons who have done the screening at the stalls will be given free of cost treatment at JNIMS till December 10.
