13,800 bottles of seized liquors destroyed in Tamenglong

A truck, which had a permit for transporting edible salts, and coming from Guwahati, Assam, was found illegally transporting huge quantities of IMFL to Imphal.

Police and other security forces, along with villagers and civil society organisations destroyed 13,800 bottles of seized Indian made foreign Liquor (IMFL) in Tamenglong district, Manipur.

A joint team of Tamenglong district police, 5 Manipur Rifles Tamenglong, COB Kaimai, 39 AR along with CSOs and villagers of Sibilong and Nungkao destroyed and disposed of 13,800 bottles of IMFL at Sibilong village under Tousem Sub-Division of Tamenglong district on Monday.

Disclosing to media persons, Paul Nangsha, SDO/SDM Tousem, who attended as executive magistrate, stated that the said IMFL was seized by Tamenglong police team stationed at Police Check Post at Sibilong village near Barak River on Imphal-Jiribam road along NH-37 on June 25, while checking a lorry truck bearing vehicle registration No AS25 AC7858 which was moving suspiciously.

He said the driver of the liquor-laden vehicle was identified as one Jakir Hussian, 30, son of Sahabul Hussain of Bangaiaon, Assam. The truck was traveling from Guwahati, Assam and was headed towards Imphal.

The truck had a permit for transporting edible salts but was found illegally transporting huge quantities of IMFL.

He informed that while police were checking the vehicle, about 13.8 metric tons of IMFL was found concealed inside the truck by layers of salt packages.

The IMFL consists of 200 cases of Seagram Royal Stag, 220 cases of Sterling Reserve, 180 cases of MCDowell No.1, 100 cases of Magic Moment vodka, 300 cases of KingFisher beer and 150 cases of Turborg beer, he said.

A total of 1,150 cases consisting of 13,800 IMFL bottles were seized, destroyed and disposed of successfully.

He said the exercise of destroying and disposing the illegal IMFL was carried out at Sibilong village from 10:30 am and was completed by 3.30 pm.

During police investigation, it was revealed that the owner of the truck is identified as one Surender Pandit, 50, of Bihar, presently residing in Guwahati and the owner of the confiscated liquor is identified as one RK Gupta, 37, of Bihar presently living at Thangal Bazaar in Imphal, he added.
