Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has sought the Union government intervention and called for evacuation and relief efforts as the Yamuna river water surged to record level on Wednesday.
The Central Water Commission, Upper Yamuna Division, stated that the Yamuna River water level at Delhi Railway Bridge recorded 207.55 meters at 1 pm Wednesday, the highest ever since 1978. The flood water level in 1978 was 207.49 m, the commission mentioned in a release.
According to Kejriwal in a tweet, "The water level of the Yamuna River in Delhi has reached 207.71 metres, which is the highest ever".
In view of the flood situation in the Yamuna river area, the chief minister called for an emergency meeting on Wednesday and wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah to help stop the Yamuna river from overflowing.
The chief minister posted the letter to the Union home minister, which was written in Hindi, on Twitter. The water is reportedly entering Delhi from Himachal Pradesh and Haryana, the chief minister said.
Pointing out that there are several places affected by the rise in the level of water in Yamuna river, he has called upon the people living in the low-lying areas to vacate their homes, while thousands have been already shifted to safer places as the water level crossed the danger mark.
District magistrates have also been asked to convert schools into relief camps if needed, and prohibitory measures under CrPC section 144 have been imposed in flood-hit areas of Delhi, according to reports.
