The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the Centre and state governments to send back all migrant workers to their respective native places within 15 days' time and formulate employment schemes for them.
The SC bench comprises of justices Ashok Bhushan, Sanjay Kishan Kaul and MR Shah.
The three-member bench directed the Centre to provide additional trains within 24 hours of the states making the demand for train travel arrangement to send back migrant workers to their native places.
Authorities were also directed to identify and register migrant workers who want to go back to their native places and send them back within 15 days from Tuesday after conducting skill mapping to rehabilitate them.
The bench directed the authorities concerned to consider withdrawing all cases against migrant workers for alleged violation of lockdown norms under the Disaster Management Act.
Posting the matter for further hearing in July, the court stated that adequate publicity on welfare schemes and employment of migrant workers should be given.
On June 5, the Supreme Court had reserved its order on the suo motu case registered on the migrant workers plight during lockdown. The nationwide Lockdown has been extended in view of the increasing number of COVID-19 positive cases across all parts of the country.
On Tuesday, the nationwide Covid-19 positive tally touched 266,598, according to official sources.
