The Delhi government is likely to lift weekend curfew and end the system of odd-even opening of shops considering the decline in daily COVID-19 cases in the capital, sources said.

Delhi’s daily COVID-19 tally on Thursday was 12,306 and daily death toll was 43, and the positivity rate was 21.48 per cent. The city had recorded 28,867 COVID cases on January 13, the highest single-day spike since the beginning of the pandemic.

In view of the recent surge in COVID-19 cases in the city, the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) on January 1 imposed weekend curfew in the city, starting Friday 10 pm to Monday 5 am, while night curfew during weekdays is already in place from 10 pm to 5 am.

The Arvind Kejriwal government also planned to permit private offices to open with 50 per cent staff in the city. The DDMA had imposed closure of all private offices dealing with non-essential services.

The proposal to ease the Covid restrictions has been sent to Lt Governor Anil Baijal for approval, according to the sources.
