All Indian Bank Officers’ Confederation (AIBOC), Kolkata on Friday extended May Day greetings to their associates and stakeholders for the betterment of society, and appealed for support for the movement against the privatisation of public sector banks.
In a release, AIBOC invited its affiliates and state units to observe the May Day in a befitting manner and to take a fresh resolve to launch a counter offensive to defeat the narrative of the ruling government’s move of handing national assets to private corporations.
It stated that May Day 2022 comes at a time when our country is recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic after two years of wreckage in the life of the working people. It accused the ruling government of attacking the rights and privileges of the working class in India with the privatisation of public sector units.
It further recalled the origin of May Day observation from the International Workers’ Day, 1890. It stated that each year May Day emerges with new challenges, which are re-emergence of the classical challenges emanating from a production system that exploits the working class to maximise profits.
The pandemic had devastating effects on the worker class’ lives in the organised and unorganised sectors, which had to accept severe compromises in their living standards caused by outright retrenchment, lay-offs, pay cuts, and displacement from their place of work, it added.
It mentioned that the neighbouring island of Sri Lanka is reeling under its worst economic crisis caused by institutional corruption and reckless liberalization of the economy, and over-dependence on foreign capital inflow to boost the national economy.
If the current economic “mismanagement” continues, a crisis of much bigger scale than that of Sri Lanka may hit India, which will further jeopardise the subsistence level of the working class people, it stated.
May Day is a reminder for the rights and power of the working class people against the suppression of the authorities, it mentioned. May Day celebration of 2022 will be organised in a befitting manner with rallies, symposiums, workshops and meetings etc., it further stated.
It invited the support of the stakeholders and the public in the movement against the ruling government’s “nefarious design of handing our national assets to the corny corporation.”
