The 2022 Vice-President of India election, which was held on Saturday, recorded around 93 per cent polling, according to sources.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former prime minister Manmohan Singh were among the first to cast their votes. Congress party chief Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Rahul and several Union ministers also cast their votes.
“Voted in the 2022 Vice President election,” PM Modi tweeted soon after casting his vote.
The polling for the new vice-president, which started at 10 am, concluded at 5 pm Saturday. Some Members of Parliament abstained from voting, according to reports.
The counting of votes began at 6 pm and results will be announed later in the day.
The newly elected vice-president will succeed outgoing V-P M Venkaiah Naidu, whose tenure ends on August 10.
According to Article 56 of the Constitution of India, the Vice-President of India shall remain in office for a period of five years.
