As many as six student bodies of Manipur on Sunday demanded amendment in National Register of Citizens (NRC) and establishment of a Population Commission to detect and deport the illegal immigrant and initiate necessary legal action.
The six student bodies are All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU); Apunba Ireipakki Maheiroi Singpang Lup (AIMS); Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM); Kangleipak Students' Association (KSA); Manipuri Students' Federation (MSF) and Students Union of Kangleipak (SUK).
The indigenous people of Manipur have been fighting for the rights to safeguard the indigenous population, as there is fear among the indigenous population of being swamped by immigrants threatening their ethnic identity due to demographic invasion, said a joint release issued by the six student bodies.
It stated that the indigenous population of the state will be in great threat of extinction if the illegal influx of outsiders from outside states and countries like Myanmar, Bangladesh and Nepal are not scrutinised timely and take up necessary legal action.
It pointed out that many vested illegal immigrants have started challenging the indigenous identity of the state by making up a fake history and misleading the public. It drew the attention of the state government to take up necessary action against those offenders.
