Manipur expected to see rise in number of eligible Korean language educators in future

Manipur University, being the only university in the entire Northeast region to offer BA (Hons) and five years integrated MA course in Korean under the new National Education Policy, has been training learners to enable them to teach Korean language after their graduation and master, professor Hyunkyung Lee said.

Manipur is expected to see a rise in the number of eligible Korean language educators in the near future, programme director, Department of Foreign Languages, Manipur University professor Hyunkyung Lee said.

Speaking at the inaugural session of the two-day 3rd Korean Studies Workshop for Indian Educators in Northeast India that began on Friday at VC Court Hall, Manipur University, professor Lee said that Manipur University, being the only university in the entire Northeast region to offer BA (Hons) and five years integrated MA course in Korean under the new National Education Policy, has been training learners to enable them to teach Korean language after their graduation and master.

Professor Lee further pointed out that the Indian Ministry of Education has adopted Korean as a second language for secondary schools since 2019. She expressed positivity that the workshop will help provide information and support for opening a Korean language course at each frontline school and developing curriculum and syllabus, which will help spread Korean language education.

Also speaking on the occasion, vice chancellor of Manipur University, professor N Lokendra recounted that the Korean language course at Manipur University started off with a humble beginning in 2012 with a one-year certificate course.

He said that the constant progress of the Korean language course would have not been possible without the support of the Korean government. He noted that the Korean government took keen interest in the development of the course and extended its assistance by providing study materials, projects for developing infrastructures, cultural assets and various scholarships.

Meanwhile, chairperson of Korean Association in North East India, Seonghee Ham opined that North East India particularly Manipur can be a frontrunner in addressing and bridging relationships across East Asia.

Saying that cultural proximity plays a vital role in how North East India has a very strong influence on Korea, she envisaged that the same could be instrumental in shaping, developing and furthering the good relationship India and Korea shared.

Ambassador of the Republic of Korea, HE Chang Jae-bok; Director. Of University and Higher Education, Rangitabali Waikhom; Dean, School of Humanities, MU, professor N. Aruna and Head of Foreign Language Department, MU, professor S. Imoba also attended the inaugural session.

Papers encompassing South Korea’s political and economic development, Indo-Korea relationship, Korean history, Korean culture and tourism, Korean language education and development and use of teaching materials among others are being presented in the workshop.
