Handicapped Development (HD) Foundation chairman Sapam Jasowanta on Tuesday stressed the need for every school to have a PwD friendly campus, besides making available the learning equipment and assistive devices in order to facilitate the specially abled students.
The school authority can apprise the department concerned for assistance to do the needful, he suggested while delivering the keynote address during the launching of ‘We Ring the Bell Campaign 2023’.
The programme was held under the theme, ‘All children are welcomed to school including children with disabilities’ at Khurai Popular High School in Imphal East.
It was jointly organised by HD Foundation, Jan Vikas Samiti Varanasi and Lilian Fonds Netherland.
Jasowanta informed that one of every 10 children are being rejected in school admission due to being a PwD. If this trend continues, then the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2030 will not be achieved, he added.
He stated that 15 per cent of the world population are PwDs in one way or another, and they are the ones who are facing the wrath of poverty. It all happens due to the inability to access education by the PwDs for certain reasons.
The aim of the campaign launched on Tuesday is to ensure that the PwDs are welcomed in every school by providing the needed facilities and cent per cent of the PwDs are educated which is the key to fulfill the SDG 2030.
Releasing balloons by the dignitaries marked the launching of the campaign which includes a signature campaign.
The programme also witnessed deputy director (Disability) of Social Welfare AS Robinson, Pradhan of Laishram Leikai GP John Meetei and principal of Popular High School A Pritamjit Sharma.
