Omicron in India: Seven new cases detected in Maharashtra

As many as 12 cases of Omicron variant have so far been reported in India.

Seven more people were found positive for the Omicron variant of COVID-19 in Maharashtra. With this, a total of eight cases of the Omicron variant have so far been reported in Maharashtra while the nationwide tally reached 12 on Sunday, according to reports.

As per the reports, a 44-year old woman and her two daughters, who travelled from Nigeria to meet her brother in Pune's Pimpri Chinchwad area were found positive for Omicron variant. Her brother and his two daughters also tested positive for the new strain, the reports said.

A 47-year old man, who had travelled to Finland in November, was also found positive for the new variant, the reports added.

Earlier in the day, Delhi reported its first case of Omicron variant after a 37-year-old Tanzania returnee tested positive for the new strain.

In India, the first two cases of Omicron variant were reported in Karnataka on December 2.  

The Omicron variant, first reported in South Africa, was announced as a 'Variant of Concern" by the World Health Organisation (WHO) on November 26.
