Manipur on Sunday witnessed a sharp spike in COVID-19 cases with 279 persons testing positive for the infection, while one more person from Imphal East died due to COVID-19, official sources said.

A total of 1,938 samples were tested for COVID-19 on Sunday of which 279 returned positive and the day's positivity rate also surged to 14.4 per cent.

Manipur's COVID-19 caseload reached 1,27,258, while the death toll touched 2,015, as of Sunday.

The COVID-19 victim from Imphal East had no comorbidities and was vaccinated with both doses, according to a release issued by the state COVID-19 Common Control Room.

Among the new COVID-19 positive cases, 202 were from the general population and 77 were personnel of the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF), the release stated.

As many as 108  new COVID-19 cases, including 10 CAPF personnel, were reported from Imphal West alone. The other positive cases from the general population include 53 from Imphal East, 19 from Churachandpur, seven from Thoubal, six each from Kangpokpi and Kakching, four each from Senapati and Ukhrul, two each from Bishnupur and Tengnoupal and one from Tamenglong. 

All necessary medical precautionary measures like containment and contact tracing are in place, it stated.

The state also recorded 59 new recoveries on Sunday, taking the cumulative number of recovered cases to 1,23,961. The state's recovery rate is 97.41 per cent while the number of active cases surged to 1,282, the release stated.

The total number of people who have been administered the vaccine reached 23,86,700 (first dose: 13,61,456, second dose: 10,19,282 and precautionary dose: 5,962).

As of January 15, a total of  150 D-type oxygen cylinders and 51 B-type oxygen cylinders have been made available to different health institutions and health facilities of Manipur in the last 24 hours, the release added.
