Delhi on Sunday reported its first case of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 after a 37-year-old man who returned from Tanzania tested positive for the new Covid-19 variant, official sources said.

Confirming the news, Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain said in a tweet that the patient was admitted to Lok Nayak Hospital, while maintaining that the protocol to stay safe from the new COVID-19 remains the same- vaccinate, wear a mask and follow social distancing.

"The first case of Omicron variant has been reported in Delhi. The patient has been admitted to Lok Nayak Hospital. Omicron is not a new disease but a variant of Corona itself. The protocol to avoid this is also the same as before. So take the vaccine, wear a mask and follow social distancing," Jain tweeted in Hindi.

This is the fifth case of Omicron variant in India, The first two cases of Omicron variant were reported in Karnataka on December 2. The other two cases of the Omicron variant were reported from Maharashtra and Gujarat.

As per reports, the Tanzania returnee was fully vaccinated and has mild symptoms, including sore throat, bodyache and weakness.

The Omicron variant was first reported to the World Health Organisation (WHO) in South Africa on November 24 and the second case was reported from Botswana. The WHO announced Omicron as a 'Variant of Concern" on November 26.
