Assam has been reporting the highest number of COVID-19 cases in the Northeast region with over 100 new cases being reported daily and the total confirmed cases in the state has crossed the 2500 mark tally. While the total number of positive cases is rising, state Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has stated that an "inadvertent error" on June 6 resulted in over-reporting in total number of cases.

Sarma took to Twitter and stated that owing to an "inadvertent error" on June 6, there was over reporting of 39 cases. "So net total, after adjustments, today is 208," he tweeted on Sunday.

With the 208 new cases reported from across the state, the total number of COVID-19 positive cases in the state surged to 2,681, the health minister said, adding that of the total COVID-19 cases, 2,038 are active, four patients have died and three others have migrated to other states, Sarma said.

Of the new COVID-19 positive cases, 39 were reported from Hojai, 24 from Dhubri, 10 from Nagaon, seven from Golaghat, six from Majuli, five from Lakhimpur and one from Dhemaji among others, Sarma said.

While all districts in the state are affected by Coronavirus, Hojai, Dhubri, Kamrup (Metro) and Golaghat lead in total tally in the state.

Like in all other Northeast states, the spike in COVID-19 cases in Assam rose after the inter-state movement was permitted. Since May 4, 74 travellers have so far tested COVID-19 positive. As many as 30 air passengers from Kuwait have been tested positive for the disease since the flight operations resumed in the state on May 25.

However, many in the state are recovering, according to the health department. As many as 48 patients were discharged on Sunday after they tested negative for the disease twice, taking the number of recovery to 636.

The state has also installed more testing facilities. With it, the Assam government plans to increase testing. The state has so far tested 1,53,326 samples for COVID-19, according to the health department sources.
