First greenhouse rice production unit in Manipur launched

The first greenhouse rice production unit in Manipur was launched at the Kwaklei Khonggunmelei Orchid Farm, Sinam Kom on the occasion of the World Environment Day 2020 observation in the state.

The unit was launched by MP RK Ranjan and initiated on a trial basis by RK Kishor, CEO, Kwaklei & Khonggunmelei Orchids Pvt. Ltd.

“The unit is launched on the idea that many plants are grown in the greenhouse why not rice. The plan is to crop the rice thrice in a year. The innovative idea of RK Kishor can be commercialized on a larger scale if the trail becomes successful,” said Atom Sunil Singh, Director, The Apunba Imagi Machasing (AIMS), Manipur.

The launch also coincided with the observation of the World Environment Day under the theme of “Time for Nature”. The event was jointly organized by Directorate of Environment, Government of Manipur; Kwaklei & Khonggunmelei Orchids Pvt. Ltd., Imphal; TMH Green Private Limited, Tokyo, Japan and Apunba Imagi Machasing (AIMS), Manipur.

MP RK Ranjan was the Chief Guest of the event. The guests of honour include Konsam Himalay Singh, former Lieutenant-General of the Indian Army; S Manikanta Singh, Additional Director (Retired), Health Services, Government of Manipur; H. Birkumar Singh, Senior Principal Scientist, CSIR-NEIST, Branch Laboratory, Lamphelpat, Imphal.

Those who attended the function as special invitees include Warpu Kom (Chief, Sinam Kom); Guru Rewben Mashangva (renown Thangkul folk musician); Binay Kumar Sahu (Cyclist and Project Officer, Give Me Trees Trust, Delhi) and Ranbir Singh Garcha (President, Sat Kartar Sewa).

The event was presided by RK Kishor, CEO, Kwaklei & Khonggunmelei Orchids Pvt. Ltd and the keynote address was given by Atom Sunil Singh, Director, AIMS.

During the event, apple nursery plants were also planted based on the concept that the fruit can be grown in the soil of Manipur. Lairenlakpam Indramani from Yumnam Kunou, who has planted apple trees successfully in Manipur, was also felicitated by the MP.
