Union Home Minister Amit Shah will attend the inauguration of the 69th plenary session of North Eastern Council (NEC) in Shillong on January 23.

The Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) coalition will meet Shah and take up various issues including the demand for implementation of Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the State.

Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong informed, “We had a meeting today and we will be meeting the union home minister. We have sought an appointment. We don’t know yet what time we will be given (to meet him).”

Tynsong said that the major issues the MDA government will be taking up with the union home minister included the Resolution passed by the Meghalaya Assembly to urge the Centre to implement ILP in Meghalaya, the inclusion of Khasi and Garo Languages in the Eight Schedule of the Constitution, the proposed amendments to the Sixth Schedule and the long pending boundary dispute with Assam.

It may be mentioned that the state Assembly on December 19, 2019 passed a resolution to urge the Centre to implement ILP in Meghalaya in the wake of the Parliament passing the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

It may be mentioned that on September 27, 2018, the Meghalaya Assembly unanimously passed a resolution urging the Central government to include Khasi and Garo languages in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution.

Tynsong also informed that the NGOs had officially written to the State government expressing their desire to meet the Union Home Minister.
