Tension grips Arunachal Pradesh; APPSC swearing-in ceremony called off

Tension gripped Arunachal Pradesh in Northeast India as violence erupted in Itanagar on Friday as security personnel clashed with hundreds of people protesting against the appointment of Shantanu Dayal as APPSC chairman following the APPSC paper leak case.

Amid the violence, the state government has called off the swearing-in ceremony of the new Arunachal Pradesh Public Service Commission (APPSC) team scheduled on Friday, sources said.

According to a release issued by the state government, an emergency state cabinet meeting was held via video conferencing at 11 am Friday and during which it was decided to call off the swearing-in ceremony of the new chairman and members of the APPSC.

The APPSC swearing-in ceremony was called off following the request placed by the Arunachal Indigenous Tribes Forum (AITF) and the Pan Arunachal Joint Steering Committee, the release stated.

It further stated that it was also decided that the matter will be discussed with all community based organisations (CBO) and stakeholders of Arunachal Pradesh.

Several took out a protest rally against the appointment of the new APPSC chairman amid reports of APPSC paper leak scam.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Pema Khandu has appealed for maintaining peace and tranquility, saying that violence is not the solution to the issue of APPSC paper leak case.
