In an effort to preserve and promote the beautiful traditional art form of Manipur, artistes of Chaitanya Institute of Sankirtan (CIS), Wangkhei Thangjam Leirak presented ‘Goura Leela’, at Lairen Sajik Community Hall in Imphal on Monday.

Various performing arts of the state are gradually fading into oblivion and the rich cultural heritage is facing a serious threat of becoming extinct. Among them, 'Goura Leela' can also be considered as one of the dying performing art forms of the state, CIS secretary Takhellambam Nanaotomba Singh said while addressing the event.

"To preserve and promote this beautiful art form of the state, Gouri Leela is being showcased today," he said.

Expressing concern that the youth of the present generation does not have knowledge about the ‘Goura Leela’ as it is no longer performed, he said the art form was performed in localities at one point of time about 50-60 years ago.

“This art form was developed during the reign of king Chandrakirti and became a complete art form during the reign of king Surchandra,” he said.

Singh said this performing art depicts human and moral values which are highly essential in one's life. Therefore, promoting this art form would help in guiding the youth in the right path, he added.

The programme was attended by Jilla Parishad member, 8-Mayanglangjing Keisham Sohodeba Singh; chairman, Ranganiketan Parbhu Ajit Das and cultural activist Irengbam Shyamcharand Singh as dignitaries.
