Student unions of different colleges have supported the ultimatum served by the All Manipur Students Union (AMSU) demanding to release pre- and post-matric scholarships within 15 days.
A release by Maharaja Bodhachandra College Students’ Union stated that the scholarships have never been given on time to the OBC and ST students. The negligence of the Department of Minority and Other Backward Classes under the sponsorship of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, and the Department of Tribal Affairs and Hill Areas is highly condemnable.
In this regard, various student unions have been urging to release the scholarships and AMSU, in the interest of the student community, had served an ultimatum for 15 days to launch various agitations if the scholarships are not distributed. The sufferings of many students from underprivileged communities are now intense due to the pandemic. As such, the union will support any kind of agitations launched by AMSU if the said demand is not materialised within the given time frame, it added.
The release further stated that the scholarship was introduced with an objective to provide support for socio-economically backward students so that there is no shortage in necessary educational requirements. However, the irresponsible nature of the state government has made it meaningless.
The stand of AMSU has also been supported by the student union of Waikhom Mani Girls’ College stating that the union will support any movement taken up by AMSU as not disbursing the scholarship amount on time is a serious matter.
It is unfortunate that the students have to raise their voice every year to get the scholarship amount and the state government should solve this issue at the earliest, the release added.
