Keeping in view the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was observed online at Tamenglong on Saturday.
Organised by 44 Assam Rifles under the theme of ‘Share Facts on Drugs, Save Lives,’ the event aimed to combat misinformation while also promoting sharing facts about drugs ranging from health risks and solutions to tackle the world drug problem, to evidence based prevention, and treatment and care.
MO in-charge, One Stop Centre Tamenglong Dr Namjupou Panmei and project manager of Action for Welfare and Awakening in Rural Environment (AWARE), Tamenglong Pyarie Kamei attended and spoke on the occasion.
Commandant, 44 AR Pradeep Kumar along with Dr Namjupou Panmei also released an e-brochure on ‘International day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking’.
The commandant implored the participant to support people addicted to drugs by referring them for treatment at de-addiction centers. “Timely medication can save precious human lives. It is the collective responsibility of society to decrease the loss of lives due to drug addiction,” he said.
Dr Namjupou Panmei highlighted the types of drug addiction and the necessary treatments available. He emphasised on the theme of ‘One Day at a Time’ and the need for having a support system for drug addicts to recover.
Pyarie Kamei further advised drug users to keep focus on the rewards of quitting in overcoming addiction. The family and society should support those who have been swayed away by drug addiction. Emotional, psychological, and societal support can help to bring these youth back to normal lives,” she added.
