Friday's agitation taken up by DESAM at Kwakeithel traffic junction is the first agitation taken up by a student body based in Manipur, demanding justice for Sanaton, who was a student of RIMS.
Many questions were raised by different sections of the people over the students bodies of Manipur remaining silent over the death of Sanaton under suspicious circumstances.
The protesters held placards which read, “Sanaton Misi, We want justice,” “Injustice Anywhere = Threat to Justice Everywhere,” “Achumba wayel puthok u (Bring justice to the case),” “Justice delayed is justice denied,” among others. “Sanaton misigi achumba wayel puthokadabani (Bring out the facts about Sanaton's death)” and “We want justice” slogans were also shouted by the protesters.
The protest lasted for around 15 minutes before police intervened and led the protesters towards the head office of DESAM which is located near Kwakeithel junction.
It is unfortunate that the government is unable to find the facts regarding the death of an MBBS student at RIMS hostel under suspicious circumstances, though a month had passed since the incident took place, DESAM secretary general Leishangthem Lamyanba told mediapersons.
Asserting that, “Injustice is a threat to justice,” Lamyanba asked the government to bring out the facts regarding Sanaton's death at the earliest and deliver justice to Sanaton to prove that the rule of law.
Further, demanding to disclose the white paper of the magisterial inquiry committee report to clear the doubts of the public, Lamyanba also cautioned taking up different forms of agitation if the government delay in delivering justice to late Sanaton.
Sanaton was found hanging on March 15 morning inside his room in RIMS hostel, Imphal in a suspicious manner. Locals clubs and meira paibis of Khurai under the aegis of “Justice for Sanaton Athokpam” have been conducting different forms of agitation since the last three-four weeks, demanding justice for Sanaton.
