Amid the ongoing nationwide lockdown imposed to contain the spread of COVID-19, the Delhi Manipuri Society (DeMaS) has come forward to help the students and families from Manipur who are stranded in and around Delhi.

DeMaS, a New Delhi-based NGO, on Saturday said in a statement that hundreds of dry ration packages have been distributed by its volunteers led by DeMaS president Sapam Bishwajit and Secretary Ningombam Shyamkishor to different areas in and around the national capital.

DeMaS president stated that the society stepped up to extend help to the needy as it received requests from various Manipuri students and families from multiple locations in Delhi.

“The intervention was planned as per requests the organisation received from various Manipuri students and families from multiple locations in Delhi. The society has been receiving such requests and it will continue to distribute the dry rations,” Bishwajit stated.

The relief packages distributed by DeMas included rice, pulses, cooking oil, onion and potato, among others. Areas including Kishangarh, Vasant Kunj, Chirag Delhi, Nirankari Colony, Malviya Nagar, Maidan Garhi, Gautam Nagar, Lajpat Nagar, Mahipalpur, some locations in Gurgaon and some sectors in Dwarka, have so far been covered, DeMaS stated.

DeMas added that it had extended monetary contributions to the four healthcare workers from Manipur who tested positive, while working on the frontline in various hospitals in New Delhi.

“Multiple packets of dry ration have been contributed by Delhi Manipuri Society to Manipur Bhawan earlier as a part of the latter’s distribution campaign that has been going on in various parts of Delhi in a bigger manner, since the lockdown got extended,” Shyamkishor stated.

Meanwhile, the relief campaign which was started by the Manipur Bhawan, Delhi under the leadership of its resident commissioner PK Singh, a few weeks ago to help people from the state who are stuck in Delhi in transit and whoever is facing difficulty during the lockdown has crossed more than 4,000 till date.
