Five-year-old child from Kangpokpi youngest to die of COVID-19 in Manipur

The state on Wednesday reported two COVID-19 deaths, pushing the death toll in the state to 62.

A five-year-old baby boy from Kangpokpi district succumbed to COVID-19 on Wednesday at Shija Hospital in Imphal, making him the youngest person in the state to die of the illness.

The state on Wednesday reported two COVID-19 deaths, including the five-year-old male child from Kangpokpi and a 53-year-old male patient from Imphal West, pushing the state's death toll to 62, the state health department said.

The baby boy was hospitalised early Monday morning with a complaint of intense fever and difficulty in breathing. However, the boy succumbed in the wee hour of Wednesday around 3.50 am.

The boy was tested positive the same day when he was brought to the Hospital, said an official from Shija Hospital.


Dr RK. Rosie, Manipur Health department said that the child suffered from Meningoencephalitis and COVID-19. But, it is yet to be ascertained on the travel history, she said.

The state health department also reported that another 53-year-old male patient from Imphal West also succumbed to COVID-19, taking the total fatality in the state to 62 till Wednesday. He is said to be co-morbid,

The total number of confirmed cases in the state rose to 9376, including 2,206 active cases and 7,108 recovered cases, and 2,033 Central security perosnnel. The cumulative active cases included 333 security personnel.

However, the state reported a marginal dip in new positive cases at 96, including 19 personnel from the Central Armed Police Force, on Wednesday.

Of the new cases, the release stated that 24 are from Imphal West, 19 from Imphal east, 10 from Kakching, 12 from Thoubal, one each from Senapati, Bishnupur, Kangpokpi, Chandel, Tamenglong, four from Churachandpur and three from Jiribam. A total of 67 of the new cases are locals without any significant travel history.

All the new Covid cases are being shifted to Covid Care centres across the state and all necessary medical precaution measures and contact tracing are in place, the release stated.


Meanwhile, 220 patients have been discharged after they were found COVID-19 free on RT-PCR test. The recovery rate is now 75.81 per cent, it added.

Advisory to public: If you were in contact with a Covid positive person, self-isolate immediately, contact Covid Control Room or district CMO for testing, the state health department stated in the release.
