The first person from Churachandpur who died due to COVID-19 infection was buried at Lanva cemetery in strict compliance of SOP on August 21 night.
The deceased was personnel of 1st IRB posted at the battalion located at HQ Veng but recently he was doing a refresher course at 1st MR, Imphal, where he was tested COVID-19 positive.
Initially, while he was in Churachandpur, he tested negative for COVID-19 on August 7, but later tested positive on August 16 during mandatory check-up before joining 1st MR at Imphal and then he was admitted at COVID Care Centre (CCC), Matram. He expired on August 21 afternoon and he was brought back to his hometown by the district administration and buried his body the same night.
While expressing his condolences to the bereaved family, chief medical officer, Dr VC Pau said that so far Churachandpur has registered 600 COVID-19 positive cases and it is unfortunate that there has been one fatality in the district.
Speaking to the media persons, the CMO said that the situation is getting more crucial and so all the returnees to the district will be tested instantly at Transit Centre, Tuibuang. The persons with test results of COVID-19 positive will be sent directly to CCC and those with negative results will be advised for strict home quarantine, to be monitored by COVID-19 task force, he added.
Dr Pau also said that there is a sign of community transmission of COVID-19 in Churachandpur as people with no travel history were tested COVID-19 positive in three different places namely Neihsial Veng, Tuilaphai and Rangkai. He advised people to wear masks and maintain social distance especially at ATM booths and other crowded places.
Considering the increase in COVID-19 positive cases, the district administration has started many measures for easy contract tracing and one of them is, people have to register their names and phone numbers to the pharmacy while buying medicines. Interestingly, many refused to give their details and instead opted to buy the medicines from somewhere else where they may not require submitting their names and phone numbers.
