Additional director and spokesperson, Manipur health department, Dr Khoirom Sasheekumar Mangang has appealed to the people to call the hospital or the COVID-19 Control Room number before bringing a patient suffering from any kind of ailment to a hospital emergency ward.
Dr Sasheekumar was speaking at a press conference held on Monday at the Health Directorate to make a clarification on the recent incidents of Mayang Imphal and Thoubal. The health departments of both the districts were charged by the public with neglecting patients who were suspected to be infected with Coronavirus.
Dr Sasheekumar clarified that the said patient hailing from Mayang Imphal was brought to the emergency ward of a government hospital. But to prevent the spread of COVID-19 infection, the patient was referred to another hospital.
Concerning the death of a woman from Thoubal during delivery, he said that the victim’s family may have attempted to conduct the delivery themselves at home out of fear that she may contract COVID-19 if admitted to a hospital. In this case, it would be baseless to charge health professionals my making assumptions.
The Health department feels that to prevent such untoward incidents from happening, there is a need to contact the hospital or COVID-19 Control Number before directly bringing any patient to a hospital. Through communication, it would be a great help in finding out what the condition of the patient and the type of ailment is before bringing them to a hospital, he added.
Concerning the spraying of sodium hypochloride at every locality as a precautionary measure to contain COVID-19, he said that spraying of sodium hypochloride may create health hazards and environment if it is sprayed without following proper norms.
Sasheekumar said that coronavirus does not survive in the atmosphere for a longer period and cannot travel long distances. As such, there is no need to spray sodium hypochloride, suspecting that the virus is everywhere.
Such activities will bring only negative impacts instead of protecting us from COVID-19, he said, adding there is a certain method of spraying the said chemical.
The spokesperson also appealed to the people of the state to stop spreading rumours or fake news. Spreading of rumours may lead to many unwanted consequences, he said.
Director, Health department, Dr K Rajo said that the Health department is putting efforts to combat coronavirus from the last five-six months. However, support and cooperation from the society is highly needed to curb the pandemic.
He appealed to the people of the state to strictly follow standard operating procedures. He continued that COVID-19 can be easily cured if some care is given.
There is no need to panic on COVID-19 related deaths. All the patients who died of COVID-19 were also suffering from other health complications, he added.
