Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday paid rich tributes to India's first Education minister Maulana Abul Kalam Azad on his birth anniversary, which day is also observed as the National Education Day across the country.

In a tweet, the prime minister called him a pathbreaking thinker and intellectual whose role in the freedom struggle is inspiring.

“Tributes to Maulana Abul Kalam Azad on his Jayanti. A pathbreaking thinker and intellectual, his role in the freedom struggle is inspiring. He was passionate about the education sector and worked to further brotherhood in society.”

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio also took to Twitter in remembrance of the cpuntry's first Education minister Maulana Abul Kalam Azad and stressed that education is a right and is a key to achieving all other human rights.

"Remembering the first Education Minister of India, #MaulanaAbulKalamAzad, on his birth anniversary which is celebrated as National Education Day. Education is a right and is a key to achieving all other human rights. Happy #NationalEducationDay. #EducationForAll," Rio tweeted.

Bharat Ratna Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was born on November 11, 1888, in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. His real name was Sayyid Ghulam Muhiyuddin Ahmed bin Khairuddin Al Hussaini. He passed away on February 22, 1958, in Delhi.

The prime minister also remembered Acharya Kripalani for his contribution to India’s freedom struggle. On Acharya Kripalani’s Jayanti today, the Prime Minister lauded him for his great vision for the nation and his contributions towards environmental protection and social empowerment.

“Acharya Kripalani was at the forefront of India’s freedom struggle under Bapu’s leadership. He had a great vision for our nation and worked to fulfil it as MP. He made immense contributions towards environmental protection and social empowerment. Remembering him on his Jayanti," Modi tweeted.
