Police Commemoration Day: Tributes pour in for brave policemen
PM Modi acknowledged the outstanding efforts by the police forces in preserving law and order.

Tributes poured in for slain police personnel who laid down their lives in the line of duty on the occasion of Police Commemoration Day.

Paying his tribute to the braveheart cops on the occasion of Police Commemoration Day,  Prime Minister Narendra Modi acknowledged the outstanding efforts by the police forces in preserving law and order.

"On Police Commemoration Day, I would like to acknowledge the outstanding efforts by our police forces in preserving law and order, and assisting others in times of need. I pay homage to all those police personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty," PM Modi tweeted.

Home Minister Amit Shah also paid homage to the slain cops, saying that the police force is a wonderful example of the culmination of courage, restraint and diligence.

"The police force is a wonderful example of the culmination of courage, restraint and diligence. On 'Police Memorial Day', on behalf of a grateful nation, I bow to all the brave soldiers who made their supreme sacrifice to protect the nation's sovereignty. The sacrifice and dedication of every policeman inspires us to serve the nation," Shah tweeted in Hindi.

The Indian Police Service (IPS) Central Association tweeted, "On the occasion of Police Commemoration Day, we pay homage to the brave hearts who lost their lives for the country in the line of duty. The nation will never forget their sacrifices".

Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs and Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri also took to Twitter to pay his tribute to the valiant police personnel.

"I salute the courage & dedication of our police forces & pay homage to the selfless sacrifices of the martyrs in the line of duty on the occasion of Police Commemoration Day," the minister tweeted.

The Congress party also tweeted, "On #IndianPoliceCommemorationDay, we pay our heartfelt tribute to all the police personnel who lost their lives during the Chinese firing in 1959 and all other police personnel who strive day in & day out to keep us safe & make the ultimate sacrifice on the line of duty."

According to the National Police Memorial, a total of 35,134 police personnel have laid down their lives in the service of the nation since Independence till August 31, 2019.

Police Commemoration Day is observed on October 21 every year to remember the police personnel who sacrificed their lives while discharging their duties. On October 21, 1959, 10 valiant policemen were martyred in an ambush laid by heavily armed Chinese troops, while defending the integrity of the nation at Hot Springs in Ladakh.

On October 21, 2018, PM Modi dedicated the National Police Memorial (NPM) at Chanakyapuri in New Delhi to the nation in recognition of sacrifices made by police personnel. The memorial comprises a central sculpture, as well as a museum and Wall of Valour.
