The Manipur government on Friday has ordered an inquiry into the death of Athuan Abonmai, advisor, Zeliangrong Baudi (AMN), with state additional chief secretary V Vumlunmang as the inquiry officer.

The government instructed the probe officer to submit his report within three months from the date of issue of the order. The enquiry will be independent from the investigation to be conducted by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the findings of the enquiry thereof may be submitted to the NIA, the order stated.

The inquiry committee is also instructed to find the facts and circumstances leading to the death of Athuan Abonmai, fix responsibility thereof and to recommend preventive measures to avert any such incidents in the future.

The order has been issued in pursuance of the October 6, 2021 Memorandum of Agreement signed between the state government and the “Joint Action Committee Against the Brutal Murder of Athuan Abonmai”, the order added.

The state also issued “compulsory wait” order for Tamenglong DC, Armstrong Pame and SP Mohurle Sandip Gopaldas, who were transferred from the district in the wake of the death of Athuan Abonmai.

In the previous transfer order, Armstrong was given the charge of special secretary (Rural Development and Panchayati Raj/ Power) and State mission director Manipur State Rural Livelihood Mission while Gopaldas as SP /CID (technical). However, the new order stated that the officers are kept under “compulsory wait” with no new posting place yet.

Athuan Abonmai, advisor, Zeliangrong Baudi (AMN), was allegedly murdered by suspected militants near Pallong village under Tamei sub division in Tamenglong district on September 22, hours after he was abducted from the venue of the programme organised by the district administration which was attended by Chief Minister N Biren Singh during his visit to Tamenglong district the same day, according to sources.
