Russian troops on Thursday launched attack on Ukraine soon after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced military operation against Ukraine at 5.55 am Moscow time, according to reports.

In a televised address, Putin justified the attack, saying it was needed to protect civilians in eastern Ukraine.

According to reports, Ukraine’s government confirmed that a “full-scale invasion of Ukraine” was underway. Big explosions were heard before dawn in Kyiv, Kharkiv and Odesa as Russian troops launched attack on Ukraine on Thursday, as per the reports.

According to a BBC report, "many people in Kyiv have rushed to underground metro stations to take shelter. Others have boarded buses to leave the city, and there are queues of cars trying to get out".

"We are closely monitoring rapidly changing situation," official sources was quoted as saying in reports.

In response to the attack, Ukraine Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba tweeted: "The world must act immediately" and the "future of Europe & the world is at stake".

US President Joe Biden in a statement condemned the “unprovoked and unjustified attack by Russian military forces" and said the US would work with the G7 and allies to impose "severe sanctions."

In view of the attack, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced martial law in the country and urged people in the country to stay home.
