Saplings planted around sacred groves of Umanglai in Imphal East

Plantation of fruits and medicinal plants was conducted considering the importance of deep human sensitivity towards the ecosystem and environment which is reflected in the Hijan-Hirao/Hichan Hilao, a chapter of Lai Haraoba, Vice-Chancellor of MUC Paonam Gunindro said.

Teachers and students of the Manipur University of Culture (MUC) on Saturday planted fruit and medicinal plant saplings in and around the Sacred Groves of Umanglai at Chanam Sandrok in Imphal East as a part of the World Environment Day 2022 observance.

The event was organised by the Department of Umanglai Haraoba of the university.

The plantation was taken up considering the importance of deep human sensitivity towards the ecosystem and environment which is reflected in the Hijan-Hirao/Hichan Hilao, a chapter of Lai Haraoba, Vice-Chancellor of MUC Paonam Gunindro said.

According to Meetei fore-fathers, there are certain rituals for cutting down a tree and if a tree is cut down, another sapling has to be planted in replacement of the felled tree to preserve the biodiversity, he added.

The programme was also attended by the Registrar of MUC Radhakanta; guest faculty of MUC Mutum Maniton; Assistant Professors Nganbi Chanu and Oinam Binarani; president of Eputhou Santrok Apunba Thougal Lup Hijam Epumacha among others.
