An awareness programme on biodiversity conservation was organised by Chandel Forest Division at Maha Union Government Higher Secondary School in Thoubal district on Thursday which witnessed the attendance of more than 250 students.
The event was attended by Maha Union Government Higher Secondary School principal Y Surendra, Chandel ACF Naorem Munal Meitei, MSF and United College Chandel Botany department assistant professor Mustaque Ahmed as the presidium members.
Mustaque Ahmed spoke on the role played by the students in conserving biodiversity for the future generations.
Naorem Munal said that although the Chandel district is rich in biodiversity, the excessive hunting and foraging can severely affect the environment. He highlighted the need to end the tradition of hunting, and urged the authorities concerned to be cautious in issuing licenses for hunting equipment.
“Nowadays, Manipur has witnessed more drug busts than the infamous Golden Triangle,” Munal continued. Stressing on the urgency to eradicate drugs to prevent the downfall of the society, he appealed to the NGOs, civil societies, students’ bodies, Meira Paibis and the people of the state to join together in the War Against Drugs.
