A five-day ultimatum has been served to the Manipur government over the Asian Highway expansion issue and threatened to impose a 48-hour total shutdown in Kangpokpi district.
Highway projects are always bogged down by land compensation issues and harassment from militant groups.
A joint meeting was held on Tuesday between the government officials led by the Commissioner (Revenue) and senior police officials and affected residents of the land acquisition for expansion of NH-2.
The land affected villagers demanded the state government to honour the land survey conducted by DC/LA Kangpokpi, and revoke and rectify all land acquisition orders and resolve the issue at the earliest.
The ‘Asian Highway Land Affected Villages Chairmen/Chiefs' Association (Gamgiphai to Taphou Kuki)’ secretary Semson Kipgen said that it is with deep regret to witness the incessant disturbing situation on the proposed widening, expansion, maintenance, management, and operation of National Highway 2.
The issuance of the notification and its procedure was intended to misguide the general public and it will not be accepted by the association, the sian Highway Land Affected Village Chairmen/Chiefs’ Association stated..
The protesters included several student unions of Manipur.
