A sports event organised as a part of International Women’s Day 2023 on March 21-24 attempted to promote gender equality in all spheres of life and provided an opportunity for women in the state to showcase their sporting skills.
“The event provided an opportunity for women to showcase their sporting skills, and also recognized their immense contribution towards the development of sports in the region. It was a reminder of the need to promote gender equality in all spheres of life, and to recognize the role of women in the progress and development of the society,” SAI Imphal said in a statement.
The event was organized by SAI NLRC lmphal, Takyel under Khelo India on the theme "empowering women through Sports.
The celebration of the International Women's Day at SAI NERC Imphal, Takyel was marked with various sporting events such as football and tug of war, and a Blind Hit event was also conducted.
“These events were specially designed to provide an opportunity for women athletes, coaches and staff to showcase their sporting skills and to create a competitive spirit among them. The events were conducted in a friendly and competitive atmosphere, which encouraged the participation of all the women present,” it stated.
A total of 157 women athletes, coaches and staff members participated in the events, divided into four groups and teams, SAI said.
The event was a testimonial to the commitment of Sports Authority of India towards the empowerment of women and their desire to promote gender equality in the field of sports, SAI said.
Prizes were distributed to the winners and runners-up of each event on 21 March. Athlete Huidrom Bhumeshwory Devi was given a special felicitation to honour her recent Gold Medal in the Junior event in the l6th Asian Cross Country championships which took place on March 7 in Kathmandu, Nepal.
