Sportspersons from the Northeast region jostled together with much fanfare to mark the opening of the North East Regional Sports Week 2022 at Main Stadium Khuman Lampak on Thursday.
As many as 674 sportspersons, including 108 from Assam, 92 from Arunachal Pradesh, 92 from Nagaland, 94 from Sikkim, 68 from Tripura and 120 strong teams from Manipur are participating in the six-day sports festival.
The sports festival was organised to mark India's seventy five years of Independence which was christened as 'Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav'.
The events to be contested in the weeklong sports extravaganza are Football(M&W), Table Tennis, Boxing, Archery and Badminton. Manipur Badminton sensation, Meiraba Luwang administered the oath of sportsmanship and fair play on behalf of the NE Sportspersons gathered for the occasion.
The opening event of the day was marked by women football where Manipur thrashed Assam by 4-1 goals played at SAI NERC Complex, Takyelpat.
Manipur's Rina Roy struck two goals while Sultana and Y.Luxmi chip in with a goal each. The lone goal for Assam was made by P Boro.
The other women's matches saw Nagaland beat Tripura by 2-0 goals while Sikkim drubbed Mizoram by 6-0 goals.
As for the Men's Football event, Assam outplayed Sikkim by 5-1 goals. The winning goal for Assam was scored by Urjay Brahma who strucks two goals while Swnwn Basumatary, Lnitw Basumatary and Mithinga fetched one goal each. Kunzaman got the lone goal for Sikkim.
In another match, host Manipur trounced Arunachal Pradesh by 5-0 goals to collect full points.
